Sell Declared “Hero” After Win

20180522_190249It was a late game comeback that saw the White Stone Leviathan defeat their White Stone brothers by a score of 7-6 on Tuesday night at Oakwood Church. Matt Sell was declared a “Hero” by the dozens of fans in attendance after a great effort behind the plate as catcher and because of his stellar day swinging the bat. More on Matt later in the story…
It was also a day for pitchers–the great pitching from Leviathan (underhand) hurler Adam Andrus was equalled from his (literal) brother, Isaac Andrus, who pitched for White Stone Trinity. The game was actually scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when Trinity scored a single run, but the Leviathan came storming back in the top of the 5th and tallied 4 runs. Not to be outdone, Trinity answered with a 5-spot and took a 6-4 lead heading into the top of the 6th inning. That is when our hero enters the story. In his younger years, Matt Sell was considered an up-and-coming “can’t miss” prospect at catcher. Sell was #283 on MLB’s “Top 100 Prospects from the Lake Country, Wisconsin Area.” Things were going great until that freak accident–which is a great reminder to all that Tigers are not good pets. After reconstructive surgery, Sell not only had 2 brand new ears, but he also had a bionic knee replacement which hasn’t completely taken. Sell’s major league dream came crashing down the day of the Tiger attack, but he has spent the past 15 years making up for it. In today’s game, we saw a glimpse of what scout Lefty McDougal saw in Sell. Lefty was once quoted as say, “Matthew has the speed of a cheetah, the tenacity of a lion, and the appetite of a Golden Retriever puppy.”
Matt stepped up to the plate and blasted it over the center-fielder’s head for a 2-run double, tying the game and reviving the Leviathan offense. A run in the 7th gave the guys in red the lead and pitcher Adam Andrus had a 1-2-3 7th inning to seal the victory.

Offensive leaders of the game were: Matt Sell (2-2, 2B, 2 RBI), Josh Watson (2-3, 2B, 2R), Brian Zastrow (2-3, 2B, R, RBI), and Logan Matenaer (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI).

The Leviathan are now 3-0 on the season as they head into their first bye week. Many of the Leviathan players were heading to the airport after the game as Coach Andrus has given them next week off. As you can imagine, these highly paid athletes have extravagant vacations planned. Max Cavaiani was traveling to the Florida Keys, Brad Fraser was flying to Brazil, and Aric Gray was heading to Eagle River.

Trying to keep up their winning ways, the White Stone Leviathan pulled off a great 12-11 comeback versus Divine Redeemer on Tuesday night to stay undefeated on the season.

Entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the Leviathan were down 11-9, and things looked bad. After the first 2 batters were retired, the game looked to be as good as over. But this season the men in red have been fighting up to the last out in every game, and this game was no different. The next 3 batters got on base, and up walked Matthew Sell with the bases juiced. Matt then crushed a line drive over the left fielders head knocking in all 3 runs and winning the game in dramatic fashion! As Matt was being mobbed on the field, the fans could hear him yelling, “I’m going to Disney World!”

Matt Sell, was the offensive hero on the night, with 2 hits and 4 huge RBI. Adam Andrus and Brian Zastrow each had a HR, with Zastrow also totaling a team-high 3 hits.

The Leviathan improve their record to 6-0-1 on the season, and face their brothers from White Stone Behemoth in next week’s epic match-up!
