MOS Advance to Semifinals of Playoffs

27 07 2011

The Men of Stone played possibly their two best games of the entire season last night at Fireman’s Park(even without two of their best players who are on a missions trip in Malawi, Africa!)…just in time for the League Playoffs! The MOS entered the single-elimination League Playoffs having played two of their worst games of the season. In the first game the guys from White Stone faced off against Westbrook Omega. White Stone got off to an early lead, scoring 4 in the bottom of the 1st…they never trailed the entire game. Solid fielding and consistent hitting were the key ingredients to the victory. Robert Murphy and Tigh Kemnitz both led the team with 3 hits each, while Jake Andrus had 4 RBI on the game. Great infield play really lifted the team, as Michael Javornik (3B), Ed Schmit (SS), Luke Schweng (2B), Terry Andrus (1B), and Richard LaTour (P) did an outstanding job on defense! LaTour also pitched his finest game of the season, regularly tossing strikes and keeping batters off-balanced with his “curve-floater.” The final score of the game was: White Stone 10, Westbrook Omega 6. The 2nd Round game vs DR Beacons was played at 7pm at Fireman’s Park, so the guys didn’t have much time to celebrate their opening round victory. Beacons entered the League Tourney as the defending league Champions, so White Stone knew it wasn’t going to be easy. One of the goals coming into the night was to score early, and White Stone did it–again scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning and jumping out to an early lead. After 3 innings, White Stone held a 5-1 lead. The Beacons did a lot of damage in the 4th inning, though, scoring 6 runs and taking a 7-6 lead. White Stone kept fighting and tied the game in the 5th, took a 1 run lead in the 6th, and then piled in 3 more runs in the top of the 7th. The MOS had an 11-7 lead going into the bottom of the 7th, but they knew they had to stop the explosive DR offense. The first batter reached with a single to center. The next batter hit it to shortstop Ed Schmit, who started the 6-4-3 double-play! Great start by Schmit, and a solid throw from Schweng to Terry Andrus at first base. The final batter of the game hit a fly ball to Jake Andrus in leftfield which ended the game! It was certainly an exciting game, and a well deserved victory for White Stone.

There were 4 White Stone batters who each had 3 hits (J. Andrus, Javornik, Schweng, & LaTour). Rallyman Matt Sell earned a pair of hits and also knocked in a huge run for the MOS. Javornik and Kemnitz also led the team with 2 RBI each. Richard LaTour again pitched a beauty of a game—very much in control the whole way. Infielders Ed Schmit and Michael Javornik led the great fielding effort—both with some stellar plays! (Click here to check out the game stats)

Player/Coach Matt Sell had this to say following the victories,
“It’s hard for me to put into words how proud I am of these guys. They played their butts off tonight, and they really deserved these wins. We have played poorly the last few weeks, so for us to bounce back like this…it is awesome! Now we’re off to McDonalds—McApple Pies all around!!!”

White Stone advances to the 3rd Round of the Delafield League Playoffs for the 3rd consecutive season, however, the MOS have never reached the League Championship Game. White Stone faces #2 seed Dr Martin Luther Church (2) next Tuesday (Aug 2) at Legion Field with a game time of 6.30pm. White Stone has the best fans in the entire league–please come out and continue to support the guys!
