9-Man MOS Take Tough Loss

Coach Matt Sell making a last minute change

The Men of Stone faced off with perennial league power Oakwood Red on Tuesday night at Legion Field and came up just 2 runs short. After the final inning was played, the score was 14-12 in favor of Red. It was a great game for White Stone, and what made it even more impressive is that the MOS only played with 9 guys–in softball, 10 men in the field is standard. That means that instead of having 4 outfielders, White Stone only had 3. A few of the key players out were 2010 Team BA Champ, Luke Dye, starting 2nd baseman, Luke Schweng, and the 1st base dynamic duo of Terry Andrus and Jimmy Fraser.

White Stone started off quickly as they put up 5 runs in the top of the first inning–but Oakwood responded with 4 in the bottom of the first. The game see-sawed back and forth until Oakwood put up 8 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take a 14-10 lead. Going into the top of the 7th, the MOS needed at least 4 runs to tie the thing up…they only were able to get 2. The final score Tuesday night was White Stone 12, Oakwood Red 14. Some of the standout performances came from Robert Murphy (4-4, 2 RBI, 2 R), Michael Javornik (3-3, 3 RBI, 2 R), and Tigh Kemnitz (2-4, 4 RBI, 2 doubles). White Stone also had a pretty good night in the field, considering that a few guys were playing out of position because of the player shortage.

Coach Matt Sell had this to say about the game,
“It was a great battle tonight, but we came up just short. Tonight we were like the Spartans, who, though our numbers were few, we battled to the bitter end…hopefully next week we will be like the army who defeated the Spartans.”

Please come on out and cheer on your Men of Stone as they take on DMLC1 next week at Legion Field (6pm) in Delafield.
