Men of Stone Advance Past St Catherine’s

21 07 2009

Schweng crushingThe Men of Stone advanced to the 2nd round of the League Playoffs tonight as they knocked off St Catherine’s by a score of 7-2. Both teams showed a lot of heart as they battled soppy conditions, and towards the end of the game, the rain really started to fall.

The game started with St Catherine’s scoring the first 2 runs of the game early. White Stone did come back and tie the game and eventually took the lead, and they never looked back. White Stone’s biggest problem lately has been their hitting, but things started to turn around for them as the Stoners turned in a solid offensive performance. Shortstop Josh Watson lead the way with 2 towering homers to left field, one of them coming right after a Jake Andrus homer to right. Dave Fisher and Luke Schweng both added booming ground rule doubles to left-center field. Also, White Stone rookie Terry Andrus had an RBI double down the left field line. The batting was good, but the fielding was even better. The MOS really did a shutdown job Tuesday night as they held St Catherine’s to 2 runs, and only had 2 errors on the night – the outfield turned in an especially good night! The pitching duo of Richard LaTour and Doug Harper held St Catherine’s to the 2nd lowest runs scored against White Stone for the entire ’09 season (White Stone held DML to 1 run)!

White Stone outfielder Dave Fisher had this to say of the game,
“The ‘Fighting Cathies’ showed a lot of determination, but tonight was our night. I knew it was our night when it starting raining…you know, because I love rain and water and stuff. When I was a child, I loved playing marco-polo in the lake—well, that was until Billy Jones threw sand in my eyes. Anyways, yeah, we played well tonight!”

White Stone evens their record at 6-6, and advances to the 2nd Round of the League Playoffs for the 2nd time in their existence. White Stone now takes on Westbrook Alpha, who had a bye this week. The game will be played at the Fish Hatchery @ 7pm! Come out and support the MOS!
